Fascinating Lapland Facts

Discover surprising facts about this enchanting Arctic region that will make your trip to Lapland even more special.

Why is Lapland called the ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’?

During the summer months, the sun in Lapland doesn't set for 60 days straight! This natural phenomenon is called the midnight sun and provides 24 hours of daylight. In winter, it's the exact opposite – there’s polar night when the sun doesn’t rise for weeks, creating perfect conditions for the Northern Lights.

How many reindeer live in Lapland?

There are about 200,000 reindeer living in Finnish Lapland! These beautiful animals are owned by the Sami herders and roam freely in the wilderness. Each reindeer has a unique ear tag so the herders know who they belong to. Reindeer can run up to 50 km per hour and are perfectly adapted to the Arctic climate.

What's the secret behind the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) occur when charged particles from the sun collide with gases in our atmosphere. The green colors come from oxygen, while red and blue hues come from nitrogen. Lapland is one of the best places in the world to see this natural spectacle – the chances are highest between September and March!

How cold does it really get in Lapland?

The average winter temperature in Lapland is around -15°C, but it can drop to -40°C! What's surprising is that the dry air makes -20°C in Lapland feel more pleasant than -5°C in the Netherlands. And the good news? Our huskies and reindeer love this weather – they're perfectly made for it!
